Hello I'm Terry, graphic designer and founder of Kreativ Type. If you have a spare five minutes (and good eyesight) I'll say a few words about how we came together – an unofficial case study if you like! Firstly, I feel a need to explain the F is for Frederick and came courtesy of my dad – also a journeyman printer, long-since retired. My personal goal has always been to maintain truly high standards in life, regardless of whatever may come my way, and plenty has. I've continued that philosophy here at Kreativ Type, where I've been lucky enough to have worked with some very talented individuals at some equally great companies within the advertising, direct marketing & publishing sectors. Around 13 years spent at two agencies in particular – Saatchi & Saatchi and EHS Havas.

My roots : At 17 I became an apprentice compositor with financial printers: E.Couchman & Co who were then responsible for both a London Stock Exchange daily and weekly newspapers, quickly learning the imortance of DEADLINES in print ! I attended the London College of Printing (now Communications) at both Clerkenwell and Elephant & Castle for four years, gaining a City & Guilds Certificate in Printing. But alas, the wonderfully skilled art of compositing and hot-metal type had sadly become computerised. I headed back to college and within a few months added a Certificate in Photocomposition and a Sight & Sound typing certificate, thus introducing me to computer workstations and typesetting. If the names Linotype 202, Compugraphic, Berthold Diatronic and Pagitek mean nothing to you then you are of a certain age – most typesetters became familiar with at least one of these workstations. But with the advent of desk top publishing (DTP) – (which many typesetters regarded as 'Mickey Mouse' – and at the time rightly so) I had the opportunity to use an early Apple Mac with an early version of Pagemaker and was enlightened, this was the future ! I joined Saatchi & Saatchi soon after, adding valuable design & advertising agency experience, with clients including the National Lottery, Woolworths, Toyota and became brand guardian for Staples advertising. I also liaised with our sister agency Bates Dorland in Paddington. After many rewarding years I secured a creative studio opportunity at EHS Havas, one of the leading agencies in direct marketing, furthering my creative repertoire with AA, Mini, British Gas and as brand guardian on the Tesco & London Lines (Wagn, c2c & One) creative teams. Armed with valuable experience I decided to try my hand at freelance creative services and fell straight into the senior in-house designer role at Tesco Head Office in Cheshunt. In 12 months I'd helped oversee the running and expansion of the design team to five. I founded Kreativ Type in 2012, with its roots thus firmly grounded in typography, artwork and print design. I can now claim a relatively large blue-chip clientelle along the way such as Xerox, L&G, Lloyds Bank, Tag Worldwide & Halifax. And the music? Well, I'd always been in bands, and written my own compositions outside of my work commitments, I decided to start BiG iN SiRiUS as a music publishing arm of Kreativ Type, as an outlet for my ever-increasing music repertoire. BiS is now nearing its fitfth release on Bandcamp and third release on iTunes, Spotify & others! Why not follow the music on Instagram, link below. I was also co-founder of an all-industry band of like-minded creative types that rehearse and gig at agency events, pubs or functions. I've gigged under a few pseudonyms too : 'The Usual Suspects', 'A Zit From Acne', 'Yarwood', 'The Allotment Illuminati', 'The Mazeratis' , 'Nan's Third Hip' & 'The Aten' – but I digress. I'm a proud owner of a BSc (Hons) Technology as well as a Diploma in Design & Innovation. As you've probably guessed, I'm an avid computer and technology geek – it is of course in my interest to keep up with new developments and enhancements within printing and publishing (not just the acquisition of vintage guitars or an original Macintosh Classic). The goal is always to promote the appreciation of traditional typographic crafts and terminology – I strongly believe 'one cannot go forward without first looking back...' either within design or music. So on that note, if of course you managed thus far, congratulations, this typeface is particularly small (my fellow tradesmen have a charming name for it – 'flys**t') ! Here's looking ahead to the future and the next great creative challenge... it may even be alongside you!
